Hamelin Trust is a voluntary organisation, which was formed in 1979 by the parents of two children with learning disabilities.
At that time there were few services available in Essex to help families who were caring for children with special needs. The parents formed ‘The Billericay and Essex Trust for the Severely Mentally Handicapped’, which became a registered charity in 1982. In 1983, Hamelin House in Billericay was the first service to be introduced to help meet the needs of parents, carers and their children.
The Trust has grown over the years as other needs have been identified through work and consultations with parents, carers, children and adults with learning disabilities, and other agencies.
