Article by Tommy Wathen: Billericay Town have been crowned the Bostik Premier League champions and completed a treble after a 2-0 league win over rivals Harlow Town.
On Tuesday evening (April 24), Ricay welcomed Harlow Town to The AGP Arena knowing that just one more victory would be enough to secure their place as the 2017/18 champions.
Billericay had chances in the first half to put themselves ahead, although it took until the 42nd minute to get the party started when Joe Kizzi fired into the roof of the net. Harlow Town tried to come back at their hosts, but the league title was wrapped up with just three minutes left when striker Adam Cunnington doubled Ricay's lead.
The league title now means that Glenn Tamplin's team have won three trophies this season, including their Essex Senior Cup win over Chelmsford City and Velocity Sport UK cup final victory against the Met Police.
The last time that Billericay won three competitions in a single season was back in 1977/78, when Town won the Athenian League, Athenian League Cup, the Essex Senior Trophy and the J.T. Clark Memorial Trophy. Many of Billericay's players and staff took to social media to share their excitement after being crowned league champions.
First team manager Harry Wheeler wrote:
"Unbelievable night. Couldn't be prouder of the lads. It been tougher that it should of been for certain reasons and tougher than people know but those boys are a credit to themselves and the club. Thankyou to the fans also. You've been unbelievable."
Goal machine striker Jake Robinson added:
"Very pleased for my friend @Cunnington14 getting the goal to seal things tonight. Does so much of the hard work that goes unnoticed and makes things easy for me and @BillyBricknell9."
Rob Swaine echoed his manager's thoughts by tweeting:
"Buzzing for the players and buzzing for the fans after winning the league tonight. Lots of ups and down but to finish as champions and a do a trevle at any level is a fantastic achievement. On a personal note YET another league title on the CV."
The title victory also means that the club have delivered on owner Glenn Tamplin's promise to fans throughout the season that his club would win the league.
Fans invaded the pitch at full time to celebrate with the players, before the squad then joined the fans in the clubhouse at The AGP Arena to continue the celebrations - with centre midfielder Jamie O'Hara climbing on to the bar to lead the singing.
Billericay now have an impressive 98 points from 45 league fixtures this season - seven points clear of second-place Dulwich Hamlet.
Ricay now have the chance to break past the 100 point margin this Saturday (April 28) when they close their league campaign at home to Folkestone Invicta at 3pm.
