Rail bosses have approved a £1.7 million improvement scheme to Billericay Railway Station and to Brentwood Station as part of the National Station Improvement.

A 'Meet the Manager' event was held on Wednesday 16th March where commuters were given the opportunity to find out more about the work and offer their suggestions which are planned to start withing the next couple of weeks.

The plans for the new station will include a large glass frontage and an expanded ticket office within the entrance. Bosses estimate the work will take around seven months to complete with a temporary ticket office being located in the current car park by the bike shelter for the duration.

Other work will see the station’s forecourt become segregated with a traffic island separating a dedicated bus entrance from taxi and drop off points.

Diane Storer, a local taxi driver welcomed the improvement work but questioned if it went far enough saying: “I was hoping the work would go further and the traffic layout would change more. I’ve collected people from outside the station with the taxi meter at £2.20 and it’s gone up to £3.80 by the time we get onto the road as it’s gridlocked. It’s so frustrating.”

Dave Slyth, vice-chairman of Basildon Private Hire Association was more positive about the changes saying: “It’s definitely going to cause a lot of disruption although I can understand the work as this station does need a good scrub and tidy up.” Preliminary work was due to begin this weekend with the installation of two new shelters on the London-bound platform after mud slides on the bank had forced the closure of the previous shelters.

@zebadw - Wheelchair access is not available at Billericay Station during the improvement works. However, if you arrive within plenty of time they will put you in a taxi to shenfield.
