Article by Brentwood Gazette: A fitness guru is set to have the workout of her life today (August 3) when she bounces round a 5km circuit in Billericay on a Space Hopper.
Jess Woollen, who lives in Rosebay Avenue, only joked about tackling the route at Lake Meadows on the inflatable toy.
But before she knew it, members of her Slimming World group were thrusting money her way, urging her to actually do it.
The idea came when I was at a group meeting telling my members 'you don't have to be extra fit to do 5km and I said 'you can even go round on a Space Hopper if you want.' Then one of my members said to me: 'I'll sponsor you £5 for each lap you go round on a Space Hopper.' Suddenly other members said they would match that sponsorship and then I had £150 worth of sponsorship pledged. I thought 'I can't just dismiss this money' so I said I would do it. I've never been on a Space Hopper in my life, I'll probably still be there at 10 o'clock at night and I probably won't be able to walk for a week, but it's for a good cause so it'll be worth it in the end.
Jess will join 120 other fundraisers who have already signed up to 'Slimming World Does Race for Life,' which will raise cash for Cancer Research UK. Among those taking part will be fitness fans from 14 groups across the county, including those in Ongar and Brentwood.
Tracy Stringer, who lives in Kelvedon Hatch, has been a consultant with Slimming World for five years and stressed that anyone – including men – can get involved.
Everyone is invited, not just women. Children and men of all ages can get involved. A lot of people have donated between £5 and £50 so far and we just want as many people as possible to join us. I think most importantly we need to raise awareness of cancer, we need to get cancer to go away but it is also helping people that do have a weight issue. It is a bit of activity for them and shows that people with a weight problem can get involved and make a difference.
Slimming World Does Race for Life kicks off at 11am on August 3.
