Police at Billericay Town Council Meeting

Pandemonium ensued in Billericay on Thursday evening when hundreds of residents refused to leave a cancelled council meeting.

Police were called shortly after 7pm to encourage the townsfolk to vacate the Billericay Day Centre after a heated exchange between councillors and residents regarding proposed green belt developments in Billericay.

An army of people had gathered at the meeting, opposed to the housing development plans on the green belt in Billericay.

John Buchanon, chairman of Billericay Town Council, announced the meeting would have to be held at a later date as the day centre was too small to house the 300 people to have shown up.

Residents shouted at the councillors - many calling out "resign" - and showed no sign of leaving.

A PCSO turned up at the Day Centre and eventually residents dispersed.

The town council hope to announce the venue for the postponed meeting, which will he held a week today, by the end of this week.
