Waitrose Billericay

Article by Alan Woods: Demand for Christmas decorations soared at one supermarket over the festive period.

Waitrose, which has a store in Billericay, saw sales of baubles and decorations increase by 143 per cent on last year.

The upmarket chain has today published its provisional sales figures for the two weeks leading up to December 27.

Overall, sales were up 6.5 per cent on last year, with sparkling whisky selling well (up 24 per cent), alongside crackers (up 13 per cent).

Christmas cards were also more popular in the store this Christmas, with an increase in sales of 21 per cent reported.

Figures suggest families were expecting to receive some great Christmas gifts even before the big day, with thank you cards proving a popular buy as well – up 35 per cent in the week before Christmas.

The figures, which exclude fuel sales, will be finalised on Tuesday.
