Article by Joe Sturdy: A Billericay pensioner bombarded 999 staff with 634 calls over ten years when he was drunk.

Roy Haines, 68, of Laindon Common Road, Little Burstead, on Monday admitted causing annoyance and inconvenience by tying up emergency lines.

The offences were committed between November 7 and 22 last year, Basildon Magistrates' Court heard on Monday.
Haines is a regular caller to Essex Police and abuses their call takers. Calls were made on one night at 7.10, 7.26, 7.29 and 8.10pm. On November 7 he told the call taker to 'f**k off', he also told them to shut up. He has made 634 calls since 2004 and 110 in the past three years.
An officer visited Haines to ask him to attend a voluntary interview. He was abusive towards the officer but on the day of the interview itself, he was "polite and sober".
The abusive comments were read out to him in the interview and he said it sounded like himself. He said he had now unplugged his phone and put it in the garage.
Defending, Mark Pearson said that Haines was concerned by a friend who he says drives while disqualified so he attempts to call the police – but this often happens when he is drunk.
I have spoken to the mental health team with regards to alcohol – he said he does drink to excess. It does detail 110 calls in just three years. It averages at just over 35 a year, but they are in concentrated bursts.
Haines was handed a two-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, a 12-month community order and told he must undertake a 12-day alcohol intervention course.
