A blaze at a bungalow in Billericay had been burning "for some time" before firefighters arrived.
Crews from Basildon and Billericay stations were scrambled to a home in Bootham Road shortly after 9.30pm last night.
When they arrived, they found the blaze was in one of the bungalow's bedrooms.
Firefighters found that the fire was "deep seated" and had most likely been buring for some time underneath the bunaglow's floor boards.
Crews used a power saw to remove the floor boards of the home and extinguished the blaze by 10.40pm.
They used one hose reel to extinguish it.
