Article by Simon Murfitt: Two teenagers have appeared in court accused of terrorising Billericay, Basildon and Grays by stealing seven cars, bank cards and other items in a two-month spree.

The boys, aged 17 and 16, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared at Basildon Youth Court charged with 27 offences between them, although five were withdrawn during the initial hearing.

Both boys are accused of five counts of burglary and one of attempted burglary.

The attempted burglary allegedly took place in Holst Avenue, Basildon on August 26, while in another incident in Chenies Drive, Basildon, on October 2, it is alleged they stole the keys to a Skoda car, along with electrical items.

Two alleged burglaries also took place in Billericay, in Tyrone Road on September 22 where a black Mercedes and black Ford Kugar are alleged to have been stolen and in Queens Road on September 12, where two Ford Focuses are alleged to have been taken.

The pair are also accused of stealing a Ford B Max from an address in Bankfoot, Grays, on September 29 and a red Ford Focus from Morley Square in Grays on the same day.

The 16-year-old boy has a further burglary charge against him, alleging that he stole an Xbox, PS3 and games from an address in Holst Avenue, Basildon, on August 26.

The boys have also both been charged with two counts of fraud. The 17-year-old is accused of dishonestly using someone else's contactless bank card to buy burgers, chips and dips from a McDonald's in Basildon and on September 29, he is alleged to have dishonestly used someone else's bank card to buy tobacco, sweets and petrol in Basildon.

He also faces a charge of being in possession of cannabis of October 1 in Basildon. The 16-year-old is accused of dishonestly using someone else's contactless card on September 2 in Basildon and in Billericay on September 12 to buy petrol and cigarettes.

The boys also face a charge of handling stolen goods, where they are accused of being in possession of a stolen Renault car and bank cards on September 10 in Basildon.

The 16-year-old is further accused of driving without a licence and insurance in Chadwell St Mary, Grays, on September 29.

They have both been bailed to appear at Basildon Youth Court on November 1.
