Pupils from Buttsbury Junior School

Pupils and teachers from schools as well as individuals from businesses across Essex had a unique insight into a local children’s hospice at a festive themed open day this week.

On Monday 21st November, Little Havens Hospice opened its doors offering tours to pupils of all ages as well as individuals from businesses across Essex. Over 90 students, staff and individuals attended to find out more about the care the hospice provides to children throughout Essex and what a hospice is really like inside.

Little Havens cares for babies, children and teenagers who have serious life-limiting conditions, providing respite, symptom control and end of life care as well as support for the whole family.

Those who attended on the day were led on tours by members of the fundraising team, dressed in festive attire, who talked them through the facilities of the hospice such as the multi-sensory room, dining area, messy and soft play areas, children’s bedrooms, bathrooms, family lounge and teenage den.

During the day, children and adults also had the opportunity to take part in craft activities, where they created letters addressed to the children Little Havens Hospice cares for. The team also answered questions about why the hospice is a special place for children who have a life-limiting illness and how Little Havens Hospice looks after them and their families.

We were really inspired and encouraged by what we learned and are keen to continue our support of the hospice.
A group of eight Year five school councillors from Buttsbury Junior School attended the open day, along with Deputy Headteacher Sally Lavelle and teacher Mrs Alderman, to find out more about the care Little Havens Hospice provides. Buttsbury Junior School has supported Little Havens since 1994 and has raised over £20,000 for the charity throughout the years.

I hope all children and adults went away with a better understanding of what Little Havens Hospice does and that they continue to support the charity.
