Article by Yellow Advertiser: Police are investigating four distraction burglaries which took place in the same day in Billericay last week.
All four offences were committed in a four-and-a-half hour window last Monday, February 27.
The crook ’targeted elderly residents’, said Essex Police, by ’posing as an unauthorised worker’ to gain access to their homes. In one burglary, which police believe occurred at around 10am, the burglar claimed to be visiting from the NHS in order to gain entry to a home. He left without taking anything and headed towards Bluebell Wood.
Then, at roughly 1pm, the crook conned his way into another home by posing as a housing officer. He quickly left, again without taking anything, when the victim said she was expecting a visitor.
In another incident, between midday and 1.30pm, the man knocked on the door of a property and asked to see the female occupant’s national health number. She refused to let him in but pushed his way past her and asked to use her upstairs toilet. When he came back downstairs, the woman asked him for ID and he left. Nothing was taken.
But in the fourth incident, at around 2.30pm, he entered a woman’s house uninvited, looked through her possessions and stole a wallet containing cash and a credit card.
In each incident, the man was described as being between 30 and 40, between 5’3" and5’9", having short dark hair and being of average or stocky build.
His clothing changed between incidents, said police, ’ranging from a dark jacket and jumper to black trousers and blue trousers’.
Anyone who saw anything suspicious or has information was urged to call DC Sam Sheehan at Basildon police station by dialling 101.
Alternatively, call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
