Article by Tommy Wathen: A scooter-riding gang chased a driver down the road, smashed up his car and punched him in the face.

Essex Police are appealing for any witnesses to the assault, which involved a 52 year-old man from Basildon who was driving a grey Renault Megane in Billericay High Street at some point between 5.10pm and 5.15pm on Wednesday, April 19.

As he was driving, his car was kicked several times by a scooter rider. The victim's car suffered several dents and caused the wing mirror to come off, before he pulled away.

Further up the street, the car stopped again in stationary traffic at the Radford Way junction, near Billericay train station, when the scooter riders caught up and continued to attack the victim's car.

A second scooter rider pulled up in front of the car, leading the victim to get out and speak to the riders.

He was punched in the face by one of the riders, who rode off quickly alongside a third scooter who had earlier been following in convoy.

Investigating officer Pc Michael Papaiacovou said:

"This incident happened during rush hour in the middle of the town centre and there were a considerable amount of traffic and pedestrians around at the time. I am appealing for witnesses who saw the assault, or three scooters being ridden aggressively and erratically in the High Street shortly beforehand. They were last seen driving off towards Stock Road."

One of the suspects has been identified as being white, aged between 17 and 25, and wore a red crash helmet over a ski mask and black clothes.

The second was white, aged between 17 and 25 and about 5ft 10ins tall. He wore a black crash helmet over a black ski mask and rode a black scooter.

Anyone with information should contact Pc Papaiacovou at Basildon LPT on 101 or report crime online at
