Moped left at Colebys Jewellers

Article by James Gregory: A teenager has been charged in connection with an attempted ram raid at a Billericay jewellers.

Four men attempted to raid Coleby's Jewellers on Billericay High Street by ramming their mopeds into the store at around 11.30am on Wednesday, January 31. Neighbouring hair salon, LJR Hair and Beauty, also had its shop front smashed by the gang.

A 17-year-old, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, has been charged with attempted aggravated burglar and is due to appear at Chelmsford Youth Court today (Saturday, February 3).

Several police vehicles were at the scene, and a forensics team was brushing down the mopeds used in the ram raid for DNA. Blood was seen spattered on the jewellers' window.

Employees at Coleby's spent the morning after the attack (February 1) cleaning up smashed glass which had shattered into their store after someone riding a moped had crashed into their door.

The store celebrated its 25th anniversary on January 29, 2018.

Ricky Coleby, the owner and founder of the jewellery store, said:

"Our first thoughts were that it was a robbery. But the good news is that no-one was hurt and nothing was taken. Our shutters came down in seconds and our security systems were really effective. We had an attempted robbery before and we opened the next morning and that is what we have done today - we are here to do business. I am very much of the fight and flight school of thinking."

What was the local reaction?

One moped remained in the doorway

One passer-by said:

"It amazes me they did it in full view of everyone. I've never seen anything like it before."

One newsagent worker said that they were told to call the police by a passer-by. She said:

"We didn’t see anything but someone ran into our shop to say you better phone the police as the jewellers is smashed in."

Another anonymous trader nearby said:

"We heard the alarm go off and saw two mopeds."
