Billericay gym crowned 'The Echo Gym of the Year' 2020

Studio 360 hold winner sign - The Echo Gym of the Year 2020

Article by Matthew Critchell: A gym boss has spoken of the bitter sweet feeling of being crowned with the Echo gym of the year award, just before being forced to shut his business due to the lockdown.

Stevie Wood, 27, director of Studio 360 Fitness in Billericay and his team were handed the accolade before having to shut. He said:

“We are very pleased to have won the award, we only took over the gym two years ago so it’s good to see all our hard work has been recognised and has paid off. It is as rewarding for the team as it is for us bosses, as without the team the gym would not be as good as it is. Our members are also just as pleased and it’s as much the members who make the gym as it is the team. We are a community gym and everyone knows each other. The outbreak has hit us massively, we still have big bills to pay and it’s going to be a difficult time for a few months. We have brought in various changes since re-opening. Our members have their temperatures checked when they arrive and we also give them anti-bacterial spray and wipes to use for the equipment. We’ve got screens around our treadmills and also around some of our other machines as well. We are also running at about 60 per cent capacity and have outlined boxes in workout areas and people have to stay in their own mapped out box.”

He said the feedback from clients has been pleasing and members are telling bosses they feel safe.

Mr Wood said running a business during the pandemic is not without its challenges and he hopes things can return to a more normal way of life soon.

He said:

“It’s been pretty stressful but we have to get on and push through it, there’s nothing we can go about it. It’s been bitter sweet as we won the award at the start of the year and then soon after went into lockdown so couldn’t really celebrate or tell too many people.”
