Article by Hannah Brown: Three nine-year-old school friends have all cut their hair and donated their long locks to charity to be made into wigs for children with cancer.

Finley Barber, Arthur McSharry and Scarlett Valk, who go to Buttsbury Junior School, in Billericay, Essex, all decided they would donate their hair to the Little Princess Trust, which provides wigs for children who have lost their own hair during cancer treatment.

The two boys, Finley and Arthur, had been growing their hair out for two years before getting it cut.

For Finley this is the second time he has donated his hair to charity, having previously grown out his hair and donating it when he was just five-years-old.

Finley’s mum, Charlotte Pattinson, said growing their hair and getting it cut for charity has been a nice thing for the group, who walk to school together everyday, to do together.

“Finley really enjoyed it the first time he did it, and Arthur had already shown an interest in doing it as well,” she said.

“They’re in the same class, so it was a nice thing to do together, checking out who had the longest hair. [Arthur and Finley] decided to have an at home hairdresser. I think they felt quite proud to have it cut, and we had a really nice afternoon, it was quite a happy occasion. Scarlett had her hair cut two days before at Tony and Guy into a really nice little bob.”

The trio also have been trying to fundraise enough money to also pay for the hair to be turned into wigs, which costs £550 a wig.

Between the three of them they have raised over £1,000 towards the costs of making the wigs.

Charlotte said Finley would check the amount raised “daily” to see if they were meeting their target.

With this being the second time Finley has cut his hair for charity, his mum said she is not sure whether he will want to do it again, but that he is enjoying the shorter amount of time it now takes for him to get ready in the morning before school.

“We are enjoying the later morning, Finley is especially enjoying that,” Charlotte said.

“I don’t know [if he will do it again], they just take you by surprise. I asked him and he said he probably won’t do it again, but last time he said he probably won’t do it again, so I don’t know.”

The three friends are now all enjoying their shorter hairdos, just in time for the recent hot weather.

Anyone who would like to support the fundraising efforts of the three kids to fund the cost of making the wigs, can do so through their JustGiving pages.
