Article by Mick Ferris: Basildon Council has agreed a £5000 increase to the yearly £20,000 grant to Basildon, Billericay and Wickford Council for Voluntary Service (BBWCVS) for the next three years.

A further one-off additional payment of £5000 to the service this year was also agreed. BBWCVS is a registered charity formed in 1979 and exists to promote, develop, support and represent a thriving voluntary and community sector across the borough, providing a range of services to meet the needs of and strengthen the sector.

The decision to increase the previously agreed grant funding from £20,000 to £25,000 a year for the next three years was agreed by councillors at Thursday’s Communities and Wellbeing Committee. In addition, a one-off payment of £5000 was agreed in order to support the charity’s work over the next year. This is in recognition of their enhanced workload to help support the borough’s community & voluntary sector as they recover from the pandemic.

Chairman of the Communities and Wellbeing Committee, Councillor Terri Sargent, said:

“The support that BBWCVS gives to community and voluntary sector groups in the borough, that support people in so many ways cannot be underestimated – especially over the last year. From helping with the development of the council’s community hub at the start of the first lockdown to support our vulnerable residents, to assisting community groups and organisations access vital grant funding to develop coronavirus related support projects for residents – BBWCVS has adapted brilliantly to the increased demand for its help. This additional grant funding will help them not only to maintain their increased service provision but also to develop the Volunteer Network as we hope people’s increased interest in volunteering will continue”.
