Article by Sarah Brazendale: Discover the new, free festival seeking to shift attitudes around Essex and the Christian faith

Both Essex and Christians have been subject to stereotypes, both in the press and in public. And the new community event, Love-Essex is seeking to change that.

The team behind Love-Essex believe that it can help put right any misconceptions about both.

The inaugural Love-Essex festival will take place at Sun Corner, Billericay on Saturday, July 9, 2022 from 2pm to 7.30pm.

What possible relevance can Jesus Christ, Christianity and the Bible have in 21st Century Essex? The organisers said:

“In a post-Covid, post-Brexit and culturally divided Britain, we believe the Christian message has never been more relevant. And the pandemic has caused many of you to ask serious questions about the meaning of life.”

The programme

As well as dynamic speaker Andrew Cannon, who has a dramatic, life-changing story to tell, there’ll be live music from Romford-based singer Helen Yousaf and the Transforming Essex Band.

The varied, rolling programme will cater for all ages and styles with dance from ‘Cre8ed4U Lord’ dance troupe, drama from The EDGE, mime artist Steve Murray and Essex-based rap artist David Peterson.

Keeping things rolling will be the talented host Nqo Mafukidze.

Away from the stage, take time to visit the exhibitors showcasing community and church projects.

Enjoy a range of activities including live art, a reflective quiet zone and even face painting for the kids. Feel free to explore.

The important details

  • Choose to stay for the whole festival, or just for a few hours - stay for as long or short as you like.
  • Remember to bring your own chairs or blankets.
  • There’s limited parking available so it would be best, if local, to consider walking or cycling to the event.
  • There will be a range of food and drink outlets at the festival to keep you refreshed throughout the day.
  • And the best bit? It’s absolutely free!
  • The vision
  • The Love-Essex community festival is the vision of Transforming Essex, a team of Christians who love Jesus and love their county.

The project aims to stage a series of major events in stadiums and open spaces at locations throughout Essex.

The team said:

“Key to the project’s success will be a strong partnership with local churches and we are delighted that we have the full support of Churches Together in Billericay (CTB) for our first event. We will treat the people of Essex with respect and one of our major goals is to see its reputation redefined. It’s time for us to celebrate the good news. It’s time for a change.”
